Shirodhara is a traditional Ayurvedic therapy that involves the gentle pouring of warm liquids over the forehead, specifically the ‘third eye’ area. Originating from Kerala, India, this therapeutic technique is used for restorative purposes and is often included as part of Panchakarma. The primary goal of Ayurveda is to promote overall well-being, prevent illness, and enhance longevity.
The term “Shirodhara” is derived from the Sanskrit words ‘Shiro’ meaning ‘head’ and ‘Dhara’ meaning ‘flow’. Depending on the treatment focus, various liquids may be used, including oil, milk, buttermilk, coconut water, or even plain water. This ancient practice is effective for relieving stress, anxiety, headaches, and other head and neck-related issues.
